The aesthetics of the eyebrow and periorbital region are the key to maintaining a rejuvenated, youthful and approachable appearance. The ideal brow position begins centrally at the supraorbital rim (the bony ridge at the top of the eye) and ends in a slightly higher position laterally in women or at the same level in men. Aging precipitates a gradual decent of the resting eyebrow position, forcing the muscles of the forehead to work hard to keep the eyebrows elevated. This is the reason for the wrinkles that form across your forehead.

A brow lift repositions the eyebrows to the ideal location, refreshing the upper eye region. My patients who have undergone the procedure often comment that their friends say they look younger and more awake. Brow lift surgery is often combined with upper eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, to achieve maximal rejuvenation in this area.

This technique uses specially designed instruments and small incisions hidden behind the hairline to elevate the forehead and eyebrows. Bothersome creases are smoothed in the process.

Traditional Brow Lift
Patients with large foreheads or receded hairlines are good candidates for the traditional brow lift technique. The incisions are discreetly placed at the front edge of the hairline; shortening the forehead (lowering the hairline) while simultaneously raising the eyebrows.

Surgery

Surgery is performed at an accredited surgery center in Newport Beach, California. Under the care of a Board Certified Anesthesiologist, general anesthesia (fully asleep) is used to ensure maximal comfort and safety.

The incisions for the endoscopic, “minimal incision,” brow lift are placed behind the hairline and are imperceptible following healing. The incisions for the traditional brow lift procedure are hidden in the front part of the hairline. This has the benefit of allowing the forehead to be shortened and the hairline lowered. In men who do not have a hairline, the brows can be lifted directly using an incision hidden in the top edge of the eyebrows.

Recovery

Patients are discharged home the same day and generally experience very minimal discomfort, often returning to work in the days following surgery. The sutures are removed painlessly in the office and the scars blend within the natural contours of the hair.

FAQs

Can’t you just use Botox® (or comparable neurotoxin) to perform a brow lift?

The muscles of the forehead suspend and elevate the eyebrows. Since Botox® (or comparable neurotoxin) decreases muscle function, injecting above the eyebrows will actually lower the level of the eyebrows. Similarly, injecting neurotoxin into the muscles below the eyebrows will decrease the downward pull and achieve elevation. This effect is only reliably produced in the lateral brow with injection into the “crow’s feet” area. Non-surgical elevation of the central brow remains a challenge and requires surgery to achieve a reliable and lasting result. Elevating the central brow also has the effect of slimming the top of the nose, imparting a youthful appearance to the eyes. Try it!

What about non-surgical skin tightening devices?

Energy-based devices deliver heat to the skin and its underlying components, stimulating collagen remodeling and tightening. While these do produce a temporary and subtle improvement in perceived skin tightness and resulting “lift,” the result is often underwhelming. Patient’s intuitively understand this notion. These devices are a useful adjunct to a surgical brow lift, however not a replacement.
