Liposuction & Liposculpture

Liposuction encompasses the following procedures:

  • Liposuction
  • Liposculpture

Areas of excess fat that persist despite diet and exercise can be frustrating. The intrinsic blueprint for fat deposition and retention varies widely between individuals. Regardless, we are all well attuned to the area or areas where we gain weight first and loose it last when dieting or exercising. These stubborn zones are the targets of liposculpture. By removing these genetically programmed fat storage areas, the underlying body structure is revealed. Liposculpture uses various liposuction techniques to sequentially address these regions in order to restore an aesthetically appealing contour. Common areas of complaint include the flanks (“love handles”), lower abdomen, back, buttock, inner and outer thighs, lateral chest, arm pit, neck and arms.

Loose skin that remains after lipocontouring alone contracts by roughly 8% throughout the year following surgery. This minimal amount of “natural” contraction is frequently disappointing and adds an element of unpredictability following liposuction procedures. Renuvion® is a revolutionary device that delivers helium plasma and radiofrequency energy through a probe inserted by a surgeon beneath the skin to precisely target and tighten the structural components. Renuvion® heats the tissue to 85° Celsius (185° Fahrenheit), the optimal temperature for maximal tightening, yet allows for rapid cooling to protect vital surrounding structures. This is accomplished without raising the skin temperature or bulk heating the surrounding tissue, dramatically reducing the risk of burns or dents, respectively. This is simply not possible with devices that deliver energy externally through the skin. Following treatment with Renuvion®, skin tightens up to 65%, which is unmatched by other available devices. Thermal skin tightening is the future of body contouring.

CONTOUR AND DEFINE

Advanced liposuction techniques are used to precisely remove fat, creating a defined and contoured physique. The addition of Renuvion® skin tightening delivers unparalleled post-surgical definition by shrinking the skin around the newly molded shape.

What to Expect

All procedures are done in a balanced and natural esthetic.

Consultation

During the consultation we will focus on creating a treatment plan that addresses your goals and fulfills your expectations. We will discuss your current exercise regimen, diet and history of weight fluctuation. In this way, I can properly counsel you on the expected long-term results. For instance, if you have recently lost weight on a crash diet, then the liposculpture result we achieve will be short-lived as you return to your regular diet and exercise habits.

Liposculpture is not an efficient weight-loss tool and when used as such will yield disappointing results. Rather, liposculpture is intended to highlight your natural contours by removing fat from stubborn areas, giving you the figure you always imagined. Incision locations will be demonstrated so that you will leave the consultation with a clear idea of the expected result. Liposuction is truly an amazing procedure as it combines artistry with technology, which is constantly improving to give patients incredible life-changing results.

Surgery

Liposculpture with concurrent Renuvion® skin tightening is performed at an accredited surgery center in Newport Beach, California, USA. Under the care of a Board Certified Anesthesiologist, general anesthesia (fully asleep) is used to ensure maximal comfort and safety. The length of the surgery varies according to the extent of contouring that must be performed. Patience is the key to achieving the best possible outcome during these surgeries. For small volume liposuction and Renuvion® skin tightening, in-office treatment under local anesthesia may be considered.

Care is taken to hide the tiny access incisions in natural body creases so that they are nearly imperceptible upon complete healing.

Recovery

Patients are discharged home the same day and generally experience very minimal discomfort, often returning to light work within a week following surgery. Post-operatively, patients are advised to gradually resume their exercise regimen over a 4-week period in order to ensure proper healing. During the 6-weeks following surgery, a compression garment is worn to control swelling and mold the final contour.

POST-OPERATIVE GUIDANCE

1. Prescriptions provided at your pre-operative appointment should be filled prior to surgery and started when you arrive home. Take the first antibiotic dose at dinner time.
2. Please take a daily stool softener (e.g. Colace) or laxative (e.g. Senokot) while taking the pain medication. Stop if stools become loose.
3. Do not take Aspirin, Motrin, Aleve or herbal medications as these interfere with your blood’s ability to clot.
4. Bruising is a normal part of surgery. Over-the-counter Arnica can help expedite its resolution.
5. Continue to remain hydrated following the surgery.
6. Resume your regular diet, there are no restrictions. If you become nauseous, carbonated beverages and crackers may help settle the stomach. Zofran (Ondansetron) will be prescribed and can be taken as well.
7. Make sure you have a responsible adult stay with you for the first 24-48 hours following surgery – this is for your safety
8. Do not remove the dressings over your incisions. They will be removed at your first post-operative appointment.
9. You may experience drainage from your incisions for the first 24-48 hours. This is normal and should not cause concern.
10. Wear your compression garment 24 hours a day for AT LEAST 6 weeks – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ACHIEVING AN AMAZING RESULT.
11. Bruising can occur and will resolve with time. There is no need to worry
12. You may experience swelling at the edges of the compression garment. Please let me know if this occurs so we can modify the garment to avoid points of constriction.
13. Gravity causes swelling migrates downward. This can cause areas that were not treated to become swollen (i.e. groin or legs). This is normal and will resolve.
14. Ambulate throughout the day to prevent blood clots in your legs.
15. Do not lift anything heavier than a purse. No pushing, pulling, exercise or any activity that may raise your blood pressure until cleared.
16. No smoking – this inhibits wound healing, causing undesirable complications.
17. Driving – Do not drive or perform any tasks that require coordination or judgement for at least 72 hours after general anesthesia or while taking narcotic pain medication.
18. Please call the office if you experience fever, chills, increased pain or if you have any concerns. Our office hours are Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm and Friday 9am-12pm. To reach me after hours, please call the office and follow the prompts.

Results

The results are intended to be long lasting provided a healthy and active lifestyle is maintained.

FAQs

Liposuction removes the fat cells from your problem area(s). Fat will increase in both the treated as well as the untreated areas if you do not maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Yes, after liposuction I have my patients wear a post-surgical garment to apply pressure to the liposuction areas. This will help limit the post-operative swelling and contour the treated areas. I have patients wear this for a minimum of 6 weeks. Most patients find wearing the garment to be comforting and supportive.

Liposuction can be uncomfortable and cause a variable amount of bruising. Patients often describe a burning sensation that aches for 3-5 days. The discomfort is not debilitating and patients rarely require narcotic pain medication after the first couple of days. I tell patients to expect bruising that can take a week or two to completely resolve.

Liposuction incisions are very small, typically about 3-4 millimeters. I take pride in ensuring that the incisions are placed in areas that are easily concealed by clothing. These incisions usually heal quite well and rapidly become a small, flat scar. You will have sutures that will be removed 1 week post-operatively and this will not cause you any discomfort.

The liposuction areas will be sore, bruised and will feel numb. The nerves under your skin are stunned following the surgery and can take up to 3 months to return to full function. Remember, this is normal and will go away with time.

You can certainly have liposuction alone, however the skin will not maximally contract following your procedure. Using Renuvion® following surgery is like putting your skin in the dryer. The result that emerges is a smaller, tighter version.
No. The energy delivered by the Renuvion® device is focused on the structural components beneath the skin to provide long-lasting skin contraction. This does not cause any additional pain or swelling above which would be expected from liposuction alone.
