Non-Surgical Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation and enhancement can also be addressed non-surgically in the office setting using a wide variety of injectable products like Botox®, Jevéderm®, Restylane®, Radiesse® or Renuva® and non-invasive devices such as Fraxel®, Clear + Brilliant®, Clear + Brilliant Perméa®, and V-beam®. Visible wrinkles and creases can be treated along with volume deficiencies, contour irregularities and facial asymmetry.

Botox® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin that when injected properly initiates a temporary reduction in muscle activity. This, in turn, decreases the appearance of visible wrinkles and creases. Botox® Cosmetic is FDA approved for the treatment of forehead lines, glabellar (between the eyes) lines and crow’s feet (lines that appear around the eyes when smiling or squinting). The durability of the Botox® Cosmetic result varies with each patient’s innate metabolism of the product and can be anywhere from 3-6 months.

Patients often ask me if their face will be frozen and expressionless. I use strategic placement of Botox® Cosmetic to both smooth the dynamic creases as well as to shape the eyebrow region. As a surgeon, I am familiar with the muscular anatomy in this region and can target the muscles responsible for the resting eyebrow shape. The way I perform my Botox injections will still permit natural animation of the face so that you will not feel self-conscious and “frozen.”

Botox® Cosmetic has many off-label uses, including in the jaw region to narrow the facial width. The Masseter muscle, which controls jaw closure, can become thickened especially in patients who chronically grind their teeth at night, causing a widening of the face. Botox® Cosmetic can be injected in this area to produce progressive weakening of the muscle and consequently a reduction in its bulk. This has the effect of narrowing the face.

Botox® is FDA approved for use in patients suffering from axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive armpit sweating). Botox® is placed in the under arm region to reduce the activity of the sweat glands, leaving patients more comfortable and dry!

Facial volume restoration or enhancement can be addressed non-surgically in the office setting with a wide variety of filler agents. In experienced hands, the safety profile of these materials is excellent and the result is immediately evident. Many patients are turned off to the idea of filler because they heard it was painful or have personally had a bad experience. I perform all injections myself with patience and take adjunctive measures, including using topical and injectable anesthetic, ice and a gentle technique, to ensure that your experience is painless and memorable.

Facial fillers are used as FDA approved in addition to off-label for the correction of volume deficiencies, contour irregularities, facial asymmetry as well as wrinkles that develop with natural aging.  Targeted facial structures include the nasolabial crease, tear trough, marionette lines, jaw, cheeks, temple, nose, lips, forehead, neck and ears.

The back of the hand is often neglected as an area that demonstrates age-related changes similar to those seen in the face. The hands are vulnerable to sun damage and are likely exposed as often as any other portion of the body. Additionally, there is naturally occurring volume loss and thinning of the skin, which exposes the underlying structures and imparts an aged look. I routinely use a product called Radiesse®, to restore a youthful volume to the hands in addition to skin creams and laser to address pigmentation and skin texture abnormalities. There is no downtime from these well-tolerated, painless office procedures.

Renuva is an off-the-shelf fat alternative to liposuction and fat grating/transfer. It is an injectable fat matrix that is re-populated by your own fat cells to create lasting volume enhancement. It is primarily indicated for correction of minor aesthetic irregularities, enhancing skin tone and leveling dents and dimples.

Lasers are light-based devices that enable targeted treatment of the skin’s structural components. They can be used to resurface the skin, improve pigmentation, induce tightening and even eliminate visible blood vessels and redness. It is important to select someone with experience with these powerful devices, as there are serious side effects if they are not used properly.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) fractionated laser resurfacing is the gold standard for non-invasively improving skin quality and texture. During this procedure, the laser removes microscopic columns of skin, leaving the untreated surrounding skin to aid in healing through collagen production. This method improves the safety and predictability of this technology. Prior to your treatment, numbing is performed to ensure your maximum comfort. CO2 Laser resurfacing can effectively treat a wide range of skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars and uneven skin texture. Healing time is approximately 5-6 days and included redness and swelling, which are temporary. Preparation with a custom skin regimen is mandatory to improve the safety and maximize your results. During your initial consultation, we will review your skin concerns and goals to determine which regimen is right for you. Following healing, you will return to your skin regiment to maintain the result.

Clear + Brilliant® and Clear + Brilliant Perméa®, is also a dual fiber (Erbium 1550nm/Thulium 1927nm) non-ablative laser system that addressed the early signs of aging. Through multiple and regular treatments there are noticeable improvements in fine lines, skin tone and overall skin texture. The Perméa® setting specifically addresses and corrects uneven pigmentation that characteristically manifests as brown spots distributed across the face. Following these procedures, patients typically only experience 3 hours of mid redness. The following morning, your skin will feel like a light sandpaper, which is easily washed off with your daily cleanser, revealing the rejuvenated skin beneath.

While the CO2 and Clear + Brilliant® and Clear + Brilliant Perméa® lasers both address similar skin concerns, the Fractionated CO2 laser is a more powerful device, meaning you trade less treatments for more downtime. Come in for a consultation and we will discuss which laser is right for you.

V-beam® is a pulsed-dye laser that specifically targets blood vessels and redness in the skin. Chronic skin irritation from natural oil production and sun damage can cause small blood vessels to appear on the face, commonly on the cheeks and around the nose. These telangiectasias are bothersome to many patients and easily treated with the V-beam® laser. In addition, the redness that accompanies Rosacea is also treatable using V-beam® in conjunction with a proper skin care regimen.

It is important to keep in mind that laser treatment typically requires multiple treatments to achieve the desired result.
