ZO Controlled Depth “Blue” Peel

The ZO Controlled Depth “Blue” Peel is a Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel that is used to systematically and safely target the deeper layers of the skin. Fixed concentrations of TCA are combined with a blue-based dye (hence the name, “blue peel”), which facilitates even application for more predictable results and increased safety. The primary objective of the peel is to achieve maximal non-surgical skin tightening as well as correct deeper wrinkles, scars and pigmentation. For deeper correction, carbon dioxide (CO2) fractionated laser resurfacing is performed immediately after the TCA peel is applied. Carbon dioxide (CO2) fractionated laser resurfacing is the gold standard for non-invasively improving skin quality and texture.

When I see patient’s for skin consultations, I review their current skin regimen to understand what has worked and what has not. We will discuss your current skin goals and the corrective measures that need to be taken. You will leave with a comprehensive understanding of your skin treatment plan and the time course for improvement. Treating skin is one of my many passions and I hope to see you soon.

Patient Case Study

ZO Controlled Depth “Blue” Peel + CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Tamara Judge underwent a controlled depth blue peel to improve minor textural abnormalities and pigmentation from sun-related damage that occurs over time. Following this, fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing was performed to stimulate deep repair that will create long-lasting textural rejuvenation.

She also underwent an endoscopic brow-lift procedure, which contributed to the visualized immediate swelling post-operatively. This was performed to improve the brow position and create a refreshed appearance.

The Procedure

During the procedure, the laser removes microscopic columns from the remaining skin, leaving the untreated surrounding skin to aid in healing through collagen production. The combination of these two modalities maximizes the depth of correction and collagen stimulation, both immediately and over the ensuing 3 months. The procedure is performed using sedation or general anesthesia to ensure your complete comfort and typically lasts an hour. As with all peel procedures, a dedicated period of skin preparation and conditioning in the 6 weeks preceding is necessary to improve both safety and efficacy.

Recovery

The initial healing phase lasts 7-10 days and depends on the desired treatment depth, with deeper treatment requiring a longer recovery timeline. Patients will experience moderate to significant swelling and exfoliation, which gradually improves throughout the recovery period. You will be given strict aftercare instructions and patients typically elect to stay at home during the initial phase (downtime). After the top layer of the skin has healed, patients are advised to resume their pre-procedure ZO Skin Health Regimen. Further improvement in the skin will take place over the next 6 weeks as deeper stimulation and correction takes place. The results obtained from this procedure are dramatic and long lasting when performed by experienced clinicians.

The ZO 3-Step Stimulation Peel is a self-neutralizing Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) exfoliating peel. It is used to treat and correct Melasma and Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation, textural irregularities (including early acne scars and enlarged pores), photodamage, mild wrinkles and skin laxity. The peel is performed in the office setting and is well tolerated, producing minimal discomfort. Patients typically experience 3-4 days of exfoliation without swelling, crusting or oozing. The top layer of the skin is rejuvenated while the deeper components of the skin are stimulated to repair textural damage. The 3-step peel can be repeated monthly and has an excellent safety profile.

The use of peeling agents can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians who used herbs and chemical extracts to restore a youthful appearance to the skin. Over time, these ingredients have been refined and extensively studied in all skin types in order to achieve results that were unimaginable years ago. Conditioning the skin prior to undergoing a chemical peel is paramount, as it improves the quality of the skin both before and after procedures, expediting healing and enhancing results. Predictability of the peeling agent is crucial in attaining a uniform result while minimizing complications. The components of each ZO Skin Health peel are precisely controlled, allowing specific skin depths to be targeted and treated.

The virtual consultation affords patients who are otherwise unable to meet in person an opportunity to discuss their goals and gather information about the proposed treatment plan. Surgery and skin care consultations are done via HIPAA secure video conferencing.
